Cassis city

Renowned for its spectacular coves and vineyards

Cassis France: a charming place

Founded by the Phocaeans around the 6th century BC, Cassis is one of the oldest maritime cities in Provence. Initially a Greek trading point, the village has survived the centuries while retaining its strong Provençal identity. In the Middle Ages, Cassis was a small fishing and trading port, dominated by local lordships. The local economy was mainly based on fishing and viticulture, with its renowned vineyards producing one of the first classified wines in Provence. The exploitation of white limestone quarries also played an important role in its economic development, providing stones used in the construction of monuments in Marseille and throughout the region.
